Buying Used Laser Cutters: Everything You Really Need to Know
A used Mr Beam for €1000 sounds tempting – but is it really a bargain or an expensive mistake?
On platforms like eBay or classifieds, used devices often appear at seemingly attractive prices. Especially when you're new to laser cutting, it seems like the perfect opportunity to save money. But this is exactly where a second look is worthwhile: because not every offer delivers what it promises.
In this article, we'll show you what to look out for when buying a used Mr Beam, what the risks are – and when a used device is really worth it.
Spoiler: we love and live sustainability and we are happy about every Mr Beam that finds a new home!
Why a used laser cutter can be a good decision
The biggest advantage is obvious: the price. Used devices are often significantly cheaper than new models – without necessarily having to make major compromises in performance. With Mr Beam, you can upgrade all devices from 2020 (dreamcut generation). This is also ideal for getting started with laser cutting. Used dreamcut devices are sometimes available from as little as 1000 Euros.
In addition, there are other advantages:
- Quick start without high initial investment
- Sustainable use of existing devices
- Often already equipped with accessories or upgrades
- Ideal for trying out a new hobby or business
Especially in the maker and creative sector, a used laser cutter is therefore a very popular option.
Who particularly benefits from a used device?
A used Mr Beam is particularly suitable for:
- Beginners who want to try out laser cutting
- Creatives, designers, and DIY fans
- Schools and educational institutions with limited budgets
- Self-employed individuals as a second device
- Event use (e.g., markets, trade fairs, workshops)
Thanks to Laser Class 1 and the Air Filter System, you can safely operate the Mr Beam indoors – even in public environments such as schools or events.
Where can I find used laser cutters?
Most used devices are sold through community-oriented platforms. These include:
- Classifieds
- Facebook groups
- Maker communities
One advantage: Many sellers are users themselves and can honestly tell you how the device was used.
Important: Make sure the seller has uploaded their own photos. Product images from the internet are a common warning sign for scammers. You are welcome to send us the offers and we will check them for you.
How to recognize a good offer?
A good offer is not only recognized by the price, but above all by the condition and transparency of the seller.
Good indicators are:
- Detailed description
- Real photos from different perspectives
- Information on usage (e.g., hobby or commercial)
- Notes on maintenance or cleaning
If information is missing or unclear, you should definitely ask.
What should you look at closely before buying?
Before you make a decision, you should definitely ask for photos or videos of the device. Particularly important are:
- Axis and mechanics (does everything run smoothly?)
- Cables and contacts (no damage or loose connections)
- Interior (dust, residue, wear and tear)
- Housing condition
Attention: Corrosion or heavy soiling can indicate that unsuitable materials were processed or that the device was not properly maintained.
A heavily yellowed device can also be an indication of poor maintenance. However, this can usually be remedied with thorough cleaning.
Which model can do what? What are the differences?
Basically, if you're planning to upgrade to the [x] or [xx] laser head anyway, or want to install the new axis, it doesn't matter which model you choose. Price-wise, the oldest model would then be best for you:
- 2020-2021: Mr Beam II dreamcut (5W)
- 2021-2022: Mr Beam II dreamcut [S] (5W but twice as fast engraving and cutting speed)
- since 2022: Mr Beam II dreamcut [x] (10W, twice the power of the [S])
- since September 2025: Mr Beam II dreamcut [xx] (20W with new axis and Air Filter III)
Which Air Filter do I need?

That depends on your materials, the machine's workload, and the laser head.
If you want to start with laser cutting and want to get a feel for it, then the Air Filter II is perfect for you. Small and compact and perfect for use. If you know from the start that you want to process a lot of wood or switch to the new, [xx] laser head, we recommend the Air Filter III. Although it is more expensive than the Air Filter II in the initial purchase, it has an 8x larger filter surface and is therefore worthwhile in the long run. In addition, it is on wheels and therefore perfectly suited for the craft room.
Checklist for a safe purchase
Before buying, it is best to go through this checklist:
- Original packaging available (for safe transport and shipping)
- Device has been reset to factory settings via USB stick
- Device is clean and well-maintained
- Laser head has been cleaned regularly
- Accessories complete (power supply, keys, cables, focus tool)
- It is a dreamcut device
Important: Older devices (e.g. Mr Beam II without dreamcut) are not upgradeable – you should definitely check this before buying. These devices are not suitable if you want clean engravings or to cut a lot of wood

Should you have the device checked after purchase?
An inspection in our workshop after purchase is highly recommended – especially if you are unsure about the condition.
A professional inspection will:
- check all components
- replace wear parts
- inspect the laser head
- check the electronics
The result: A device that functions reliably and safely again.
Optionally, with certain upgrades, you can even have the electronics completely renewed. We recommend the Fast A[x]is Inspection after acquiring a used device. During the inspection, not only will the new, faster axis be installed - the entire electronics will also be renewed.
What upgrades are possible?
A major advantage of Mr Beam devices is their upgradeability. This makes used devices particularly attractive.
Possible upgrades:
- Height Extension (for taller workpieces and Rotary)
- Stronger laser heads (e.g., 10W or 20W)
- Axis upgrades (e.g., Fast Axis)
- Software updates (BeamOS 2.0)
This allows you to adapt your device step by step to your requirements.
How does upgrading work in practice?
You can start with a cheaper device and expand it later as needed.
This means:
- low entry price
- flexible further development
- longer service life
This is a great advantage, especially for beginners or growing projects.

A frequently underestimated point when buying used is support. Here, Mr Beam offers a big advantage:
