This is how you can create unique Easter decorations or a personalized gift in no time.

What is cross-stitch?

Briefly explained
Cross-stitch is an embroidery technique where threads are laid in a cross shape over a grid. This creates patterns, lettering, or entire motifs.

The technique originated in the Middle Ages and is experiencing a real comeback today – especially in combination with modern tools like laser cutters.

Why cross-stitch on wood?

Instead of classic fabric, you'll be working with a laser-cut wooden template. This offers several advantages:

  • Perfect hole spacing – no pre-drawing needed
  • Ideal for beginners
  • Combination of digital precision & craftsmanship
  • Stable and durable – perfect as decoration

The Mr Beam is perfect for cutting wood. Especially with the [x] or even the new [xx] head, wood can be cut easily and quickly. You can also design and cut your own embroidery patterns – there are almost no limits to creativity!

Step 1: Preparation

Cross-stitch preparation

Cut a piece of thread to a suitable length – preferably a bit shorter to prevent tangling. Thread it through the needle. Tip: If you lightly dampen the thread, it will be easier to thread.

Step 2: How cross-stitch works

Cross-stitch instructions

Bring the needle from back to front through the first hole. It's best to start in reading direction (left to right or top to bottom).

Important: Leave a small piece of thread at the back so you can tie it off later.

Step 3: The right technique

Work row by row:

  • Stitch diagonally through the opposite hole
  • On the back, continue straight down
  • This creates even diagonal lines on the front

Cross-stitch technique

At the end of the row, work back – the stitches will cross, forming the typical X.

Important: All stitches should point in the same direction – this ensures a clean overall look.

Step 4: Complete the pattern

Cross-stitch pattern

Continue stitching row by row until your motif is complete. Be careful not to miss any holes – otherwise, there will be gaps in the pattern.

Step 5: Finishing

Cross-stitch finish

Tie off the threads on the back. If you wish, you can now glue a piece of felt to cover the back neatly.

Your individual cross-stitch project is complete! Perfect as:

  • Easter decoration
  • A gift
  • A DIY project with children

Tips for a perfect result

Pro Tips
  • If the thread twists: simply let the needle hang – it will untangle itself
  • Work with short threads to avoid knots
  • Always keep the stitch direction consistent for a clean result
  • Avoid overly long "jumps" on the back

Conclusion

Cross-stitch meets laser cutting – and it's precisely this combination that makes it so appealing. You combine digital precision with true craftsmanship and create something unique.

Try it out and discover how easy embroidery can be!
